​Robert Walsh Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Biochemistry

Robert Walsh

The Walsh Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Biochemistry is a distinction awarded by Providence College to a faculty member in recognition of contributions to the discipline of the chemical sciences. The holder of the Walsh Chair will be empowered to make a distinctive contribution to the educational mission and goals of Providence College and to his or her field, in honor of the expressed intentions of Mr. Robert Walsh ’39 whose generous gift made the Walsh Chair possible. The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is currently conducting a national search throughout 2014 for a biochemist as the initial chair holder. The position will begin in the Fall of 2015.

Expectations:

  • Exemplify excellence in teaching, including
    development of innovative educational programs
  • Maintain regular program of scholarly activity, including acquiring external research funding
  • Encourage student engagement in teaching and research
  • Communicate with and promote stewardship of donors
  • Appear at alumni or trustee gatherings each year

Term:

The holder of Walsh Chair will serve one or more five-year terms. One may apply for subsequent terms beginning in the fourth academic year of a term, subject to approval by the department, the dean and the provost.

Compensation:

  • Salary and expenses will be paid by proceeds from the endowment
  • All decisions about initial salary, academic rank, start-up package, and laboratory facilities will be made by the provost after consultation with the department chair and dean
  • One-course reduction per semester
  • $6,000 annual supplemental development fund
