FriAir Net: The Friar Air Monitoring Network at Providence College

About the Monitoring Network:
Established in 2023, FriAir Net, the Friar Air Monitoring Network at Providence College is run by the Clark Research Group. Currently, the network consists of three sampling locations throughout the state of Rhode Island: one on the Providence College campus, one near the Port of Providence, and one on the Roger Williams University campus. Each site is equipped with two high-volume active air samplers. One sampler samples all particle sizes, regardless of size fraction (total suspended particulate matter, TSP), while the other has a size selective inlet to only sample particulate matter less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5). The station at Providence College also has a meteorology station.
Students in the Clark Research Group and our collaborators take filter-based samples on a regular sampling schedule to help characterize semi-volatile organic compounds, such as flame retardants and plasticizers, in the air.
Funding to establish and maintain FriAir Net has been generously provided by Providence College and RI-INBRE.
