Clubs and Societies
Chemistry and Biochemistry majors are encouraged to participate in student clubs and organizations, such as those listed below.
Student Clubs
Chemistry Club
Chemistry Club aims to bring together those interested in chemistry of all grades to keep updated on relevant chemistry discoveries, explore different areas of chemistry, and listen to guest lecturers in a fun and stress-free environment. This club is part of the Providence College ACS students affiliates chapter. They are a platform to spread awareness of important issues, to share styles, cultures, textiles, tradition, culture, ideas and advice!
PC SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science)

The PC Chapter of SACNAS aims to build a vibrant and inclusive community for STEM students on campus that fosters mentorship, professional networking, and academic growth. They are committed to cultivating an environment where students can connect, support one another, and celebrate the rich diversity of cultures that shape our shared experiences.
The National SACNAS organization continues to welcome a diverse membership of over 8,000 multicultural and multidisciplinary members, hold national annual meetings, and advocate for important issues related to the intersections between science, culture, and community.
Women in STEM

The Women in STEM Club at Providence College is committed to empowering and supporting women pursuing studies and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Rooted in the College’s commitment to academic excellence, ethical leadership, and community, their mission is to foster a supportive environment where women in STEM can grow in confidence, share knowledge, and develop as leaders.
Through collaboration, outreach, and opportunities for growth, they aim to empower women to pursue their passions and make lasting impacts in STEM and the broader community.
Honor Societies
Phi Lambda Upsilon
The aims and purposes of Phi Lambda Upsilon are the promotion of high scholarship and original investigation in all branches of pure and applied chemistry. Phi Lambda Upsilon was founded as an honorary chemical society in March 1899, at the University of Illinois. This was the first honor society dedicated to a single scientific discipline. Although Providence College does not host an official chapter of Phi Lambda Upsilon, the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry awards graduating students with Memberships-at-large.
Membership-at-large
Seniors affiliated with American Chemical Society approved chemistry, biochemistry, or chemical engineering departments without active Phi Lambda Upsilon chapters may be nominated for Membership-at-large by their department chair, by two Phi Lambda Upsilon members, or by the Eligibility Committee of a nearby chapter. Requirements for membership shall be:
- A minimum of 30 semester hours or the equivalent of Chemistry, chemical engineering, and/or biochemistry;
- Rank in the top 20% of seniors in their department or at their institution;
- A minimum grade point average of 3.0/4.0.
Sigma Xi
Sigma Xi is an international scientific research honor society and one of the oldest and most prestigious honor societies in the world. Our chapter at Providence College was founded in 2008. In addition to nominating student researchers for Sigma Xi membership, our students have organized an annual research poster session in the fall and a banquet in the spring, and we have also supported students and faculty presenting at the society’s annual meeting.
Sigma Xi membership is open to students in any discipline who have conducted research in a field of pure or applied science, including the social sciences, health sciences, mathematics, neuroscience, history of science, STEM pedagogy, engineering, and the natural sciences. All Providence College students interested in and participating in research are welcome to join the chapter and be nominated for honor society membership.
