Summer Research: Biology

  • UCLA has a summer research program for undergraduates in many fields. Deadline is 2 February.
  • Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, has a summer research program in biology. Deadline is 15 February.
  • Mystic Aquarium
  • The University of Delaware’s College of Marine and Earth Studies has a summer REU program. Students will complete a research project in the areas of chemical, physical, or biological oceanography, marine biology, marine geology, or marine biochemistry. Deadline is 18 February.
  • Western Kentucky University has a summer REU program in biotechnology. A stipend, housing, meals and travel allowance are included. The program runs from 30 May until 5 August. Applications due 4 February.
  • New England Wildflower Society has internship and volunteer opportunities.
  • Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, Salisbury Cove, Maine.
  • Maryland Sea Grant Institute has summer fellowships for students to work on the Chesapeake Bay. Application deadline is mid-February.
  • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute has summer fellowships for students who have completed their junior or senior years and majored in any of the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, math, or engineering. Deadline is 15 Feb.
  • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has summer programs in the following fields: Applied Mathematics, Bioenergy Systems, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Nanomaterials and Nanoscience, Optics and Laser Physics, Redox Biology and Biochemistry and Virology. Deadline is 1 March.
  • Columbia University has compiled a list of biology summer research opportunities at its own institution, as well as in the surrounding New York City area.
  • Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s Watson School of Biological Sciences in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, has a summer research program in the areas of cancer biology, neurobiology, plant biology, cell biology, genetics, molecular and structural biology, and computational biology. Applications are due 15 January.
  • New York University’s Center for Neural Science has a summer program.
  • Cornell University and UNH sponsor a summer internship program at the Shoals Marine Biology Lab. In order to be eligible for an internship, you need to take a summer course at Shoals.  Click here for a list of internship and required pre-requisite courses. There is also a video describing the Shoals Marine Lab (narrated by the daughter of a friend of one of the faculty members in the department).
  • Roswell Park Cancer Institute has a summer research program. Research projects over the areas of molecular-cellular biology, genetics, immunology, pharmacology and bioinformatics. Dormitory housing is available. In addition to research, students have the opportunity to attend classes and seminars. Social activities and field trips are scheduled for weekends. Deadline is 1 February 2011.
  • The University of Oregon has summer research fellowships in the areas of evolution, development, genomics, structural and molecular biology, genetics, cell biology, neuroscience, ecology, marine biology, and biochemistry.
  • The College of Charleston has a summer research program that focuses on marine organism health.
  • The University of South Carolina has an REU program in marine biogeochemistry.
  • The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences runs a summer REU program.
